Questions 19~22 refer to the following memo
Glenford Manufacturing, Inc.
Official Communication
From: Sean Carmichael, Operations Department
To:Inna Tucker, Sales Department Manager
The monthly sales staff meeting has been relocated from auditorium 3 to room 402. Auditorium 3 will be undergoing repairs from April 8-15, which is why it will be unavailable for your usual meeting on the 10th.
Room 402 contains the same audiovisual capabilities as auditorium 3, but its seating capacity is smaller. It can only fit 65 people comfortably, whereas the auditorium can do over 100.
If this change is unacceptable, there are two alternatives. First, auditorium 2 is available on the afternoon of the 10th. It holds as many people as auditorium 3, but it has really outdated electronic equipment compared to auditorium 3. And second, if the meeting is rescheduled for after the 15th, the newly refurbished auditorium 3 will be available to you.
Please contact me or another member of the operations department if you wish to change your current room reservation.
Thank you and have a nice day.

As recently as three decades ago, many Americans believed that using credit was an unwise and?dangerous way to pay for what they bought. Some even thought that owing money to a store or a?credit company was something to be ashamed of.Good citizens, they believed, always bought what?they wanted with real money and they paid the full price immediately.
Today, however, all that has changed.Credit,as some observers have noted, has become a?way of life in the United States.More and more Americans now are depending on those small pieces?of plastic, credit cards,to pay for large purchases such as televisions, record players or furniture. Many people today would consider it unusual not to use a credit card to pay for a costly restaurant?dinner,a hotel room or an airline trip. And there are some situations in which Americans must have?credit cards. If they want the temporary use of a car,for example, they first must give the car rental?company the number of their credit card. That number is considered a guarantee that they will return?the car and pay for using it.
Credit cards offer two major services to Americans.First of all, they are easier and safer to?carry than large amounts of money.Second, they permit people to borrow,to have the immediate?pleasure of owning something, even if they do not have enough money to pay for it at the time. With?credit cards people pay for goods or services at the end of each month instead of when they buy them. And when the time does come to pay, most credit cards offer people a choice. They can pay all of?what they owe for the month or they can just pay usually between 5 and 10 percent of what they owe.
What advantage can credit card holders have?A.They can choose not to pay for their purchases.
B.They can easily borrow money at a lower interest.
C.They can own something before they actually pay for it.
D.They can pay only a small amount of what they owe.

问答题Practice 2 Prices have fallen in the food business because of advances in food production and distribution technology. Consumers have benefited greatly from those advances. People who predicted that the world would run out of food were wrong. We are producing more and more food with less and less capital. Food is therefore more plentiful and cheaper than it has ever been. Spending on food compared with other goods has fallen for many years, and continues to drop. Supermarkets have helped push down prices mainly because of their scale. Like any big business, they can invest in IT systems that make them efficient. And their size allows them to buy in bulk. As supermarkets get bigger, the prices get lower. Huge retail companies such as Wal-Mart have tremendous power and they can put pressure on producers to cut their margins. As a result, some producers have had to make cuts. In recent years, Unilever has cut its workforce by 33,000 to 245,000 and dropped lots of its minor brands as part of its “path to growth” strategy. Cadbury has shut nearly 20 per cent of its 133 factories and cut 10 per cent of its 55,000 global workforce. These cuts help keep costs down, and the price of food stays low. Does cheap food make people unhealthy? Cheap food may encourage people to eat more. Food companies certainly think that giving people more food for their money makes them buy more. Giving people bigger portions is an easy way of making them feel they have got a better deal. That is why portions have got larger and larger. In America, soft drinks came in 8oz (225g) cans in the past, then 12oz (350g), and now come in 20oz (550g) cans. If a company can sell you an 8oz portion for $ 7, they can sell you a 12oz portion for $ 8. The only extra cost to the company is the food, which probably costs 25 cents. Now companies are under pressure to stop selling bigger portions for less money. But it is hard to change the trend.

问答题Practice 4 In the first year or so of Web business, most of the action has revolved around efforts to tap the consumer market. More recently, as the Web proved to be more than a fashion, companies have started to buy and sell products and services with one another. Such business-to-business sales make sense because businesspeople typically know what product they’re looking for. Nonetheless, many companies still hesitate to use the Web because of doubts about its reliability. “Businesses need to feel they can trust the pathway between them and the supplier,” says senior analyst Blane Erwin of Forrester Research.

问答题Read the passage carefully and answer questions 1 to 5. Answer each question in a maximum of 10 words. Remember to write the answers on the answer sheet Overseas assignments are becoming increasingly important to advancement within executive ranks. The executive stationed in another country no longer need fear being “out of sight and out of mind.” He or she can be sure that the overseas effort is central to the company’s plan for success, and that promotions often follow or accompany an assignment abroad. If an employee can succeed in a difficult assignment overseas, superior will have greater confidence in his or her ability to cope back in the United States where cross-cultural considerations and foreign language issues are becoming more and more prevalent. Thanks to a variety of relatively inexperience communications devices with business applications, even small businesses in the United States are able to get into international markets. English is still the international language of business. But there is an ever-growing need for people who can speak another language. A second language isn’t generally required to get a job in business, but having language skills gives a candidate the edge when other qualifications appear to be equal. The employee posted abroad who speaks the country’s principal language has an opportunity to fast-forward certain negotiations, and can have the cultural insight to know when it is better to move more slowly. The employee at the home office who can communicate well with foreign clients over the telephone or by fax machine is an obvious asset to the firm. Questions: 1.What is the author’s attitude toward high-tech communications equipment? 2.What is becoming more and more important to promotion? 3.What does “out of sight and out of mind” (Line 2. Para. 3) probably mean? 4.According to the passage, what is an important consideration of international corporations in employing people today? 5.What is the advantage of employees having foreign language skills?
