民俗学是一门帮助人们认识历史与文化、改造现实社会生活的人文科学。它包括对民俗事项的理论探索与阐释、对民俗史和民俗学史的研究与叙述、民俗学方法论以及对民俗资料的收集保存等方面的理论与技术的探讨。

相对热门专业就业而言，民族学和民俗学均属于比较冷门的专业，其就业特点比较广泛，一般毕业学生均是服务于国家事业单位、高校等、单位。这两门学科属于学术研究型科学，相对于有意向继续深造的读博的同学是一个很好的选择。
