Schools in the U.S. generally do not have a specific teaching plan for teachers to follow, and they certainly don’t have a set of textbooks that are taught by all school districts throughout the country. That’s why textbooks vary greatly from school to school, and from teacher to teacher even though they are all teaching the same subject in the same grade. Some schools provide books to use, but teachers do not strictly follow them. They only use them as a reference, and enjoy pointing out mistakes and wrong information given in the books. They often share their own points of view with their students. Teaching like this has many advantages. Teachers can bring out their expertise, fully elaborating their most familiar areas. Students are more interested in what they are studying. Also this flexible teaching style. benefits students in the development of critical thinking skills and the ability to apply them. On the other hand teaching like this also has many drawbacks. It causes uneven study levels. It is even more so among different schools and districts. Students in the same grade do not usually have a thorough understanding of a subject taught in the same school year. The teacher for the following year would have to spend a lot of time finding out what the students already know or do not know in the subject before starting his/her own teaching plan. Some parts may be repeated, resulting in waste of time; and other parts may not be covered at all.Exams in American schools are much less rigid than those in China. Teaching is flexible, so are exams. Even if you memorized the whole textbook, it might not be of much help in the exams. My Chinese friend envied me for nothaving to worry about the competition for attending the best schools by takingendless exams.(1) What are advantages of the flexible teaching style?A、It benefits students in the development of critical thinking skills.B、Teachers can bring out their expertise.C、Students may have freedom in study.D、Both A and B.(2) The flexible teaching style. ______.A、may cause troubles to the teacher for the following year.B、usually helps students to have a thorough understanding of a subjectC、makes the exam easy.D、may save teachers’time(3) The word drawbacks (paragraph 2) means______.A、mistakesB、difficultiesC、disadvantagesD、troubles(4) From the passage we are told American teachers______.A、have to follow a specific teaching plan.B、dislike pointing out mistakes and wrong information given in the books.C、teaching the same subject may use different textbooks.D、strictly follow books provided by schools.(5) This article is mainly about ______.A、the advantages and disadvantages of the flexible teaching styleB、American schoolsC、American teachersD、teaching methods in American schools

In has been shown that children who smoke have certain characteristics.Compared with non-smokers they are more rebellious, their work deteriorates as they move up school, they are more likely to leave school early, and are more often delinquent and sexually precocious. Many of these features can be summarized as anticipation of adulthood. There are a number of factors which determine the onset of smoking, and these are largely psychological and social. They include availability of cigarettes, curiosity, rebelliousness, appearing tough, anticipation of adulthood, social confidence, the example of parents and teachers, and smoking by friends and older brothers and sisters. It should be much easier to prevent children from starting to smoke than to persuade adults to give up the habit once established, but in fact this has proved very difficult. The example set by people in authority, especially parents, health care workers, and teachers, is of prime importance.School rules should forbid smoking by children on the premises. This rule has been introduced at Summerhill School where I spent my schooldays. There is, however, a risk of children smoking just to rebel against the rules, and even in those schools which have tried to enforce no smoking by corporal punishment there is as much smoking as in other schools.Nevertheless, banning smoking is probably on balance beneficial.Teachers too should not smoke on school premises, at least not in front of children1、Which of the following is a common characteristic of young smokers?A、DisobedienceB、LazinessC、Lack of intelligenceD、Vanity2、Which of the following is NOT true according to the passage?A、Some children start to smoke out of curiosityB、Many children start to smoke because they want to appear mature.C、In order to have fewer children smokers, parents, teachers and health care workers should not smoke.D、It is not as difficult to prevent children from starting to smoke as to dissuade adults from smoking.3、The writer concludes that school rules to forbid smoking().A、should be introduced, for it really works at the school where he once studied.B、should not be introduced, for it may cause disturbance.C、should be introduced though it may not work effectively.D、needn't be introduced as long as teachers don't smoke in front of children.4、The author's attitude towards his writing is().A、objectiveB、emotionalC、criticalD、indifferent

Approaches to Understanding IntelligencesIt pays to be smart, but we are not all smart in the same way.You may be a talented musician, but youmight not be a good reader. Each of us is different.Psychologists disagree about what is intelligence and what are talents or personal abilities.Psychologistshave two different views on intelligence. Some believe there is one general intelligence.Others believe there are many different intelligences. Some psychologists say there is one type of intelligence that can be measured with IQ tests.Thesepsychologists support their view with research that concludes that people who do well on one kind of test for mental ability do well on other tests. They do well on tests using words, numbers,or pictures. They do well on individual or group tests, and written or oral tests. Those who do poorly on one test,do the same on alltests.Studies of the brain show that there is a biological basis for general intelligence. The brains of intelli-gent people use less energy during problem solving. The brain waves of people with higher intelligence show a quicker reaction. Some researchers conclude that differences in intelligence result from differences in the speed and effectiveness of information processing by the brain.Howard Gardner,a psychologist at the Harvard School of Education, has four children. He believes that all children are different and shouldn't be tested by one intelligence test.Although Gardner believes general intelligence exists,he doesn't think it tells much about the talents of a person outside of formal schooling. He thinks that the human mind has different intelligences. These intelligences allow us to solve the kinds of problems we are presented with in life. Each of us has different abilities within these intelligences.Gardner believes that the purpose of school should be to encourage development of all of our intelligences.Gardner says that his theory is based on biology. For example, when one part of the brain is injured, other parts of the brain still work.People who cannot talk because of brain damage can still sing. So,there is not just one intelligence to lose.Gardner has identified 8 different kinds of intelligence:linguistic, mathematical, spatial, musical , interpersonal , intrapersonal , body-kinesthetic(身体动觉的), and naturalistic.Gardner be1ieves that______.A:all children are alikeB:children should take one intelligence testC:there is no general intelligenceD:children have different intelligences

Teaching Is“One of the Least Popular Jobs in the UK”1. The UK government has just published a report on the future of secondary-school teaching (pupils aged 11-16),and the conclusion of the report is that many secondary schools now face great difficulties in finding people who want to be teachers.Since the 1980s,the number of grad-uates who say they would“seriously consider”teaching as a career has fallen sharply, from 64% in 1982 to just 17%today.The report suggests that urgent action needs to be taken in order to encourage more intelligent young graduates into teaching.2. The main drawback of secondary teaching, according to the report,is the low salary.Earnings in teaching are much lower than in many other jobs, and this means that fewer and fewer young people decide to be teachers.Joanne Manners,24 is a good example:“I graduated in maths last year, and I was thinking of doing a teacher training course to become a maths teacher, but when I looked into the details , it became clear that teaching isn't a very lucrative(赚钱的)job these days .I saw I could earn twice as much if I worked in marketing or advertising, and so I decided not to become a teacher.”3 .It's not just about the money, however. The survey concluded that another reason why people don't want to be teachers is that some teenagers behave very badly in school. A lot of schools have problems with discipline, and it seems clear that children do not have the same respect for teachers as in the past. Here's the view of Dave Hallam,an accountant from London:“I think parents are to blame .They should have stricter rules with their children at home and also teach their children to have more respect for teachers.”4.“I love teaching;it's my passion.I've been a secondary-school teacher of Spanish for ten years now,and although it's a very demanding job,it's very satisfying. When I see my students passing their Spanish exams,or singing along to Spanish pop songs,It makes me feel so proud.” Says Brian Jones, who works in a secondary school in London. So what does he think the government should do to encourage more people to become teachers?“My view is that the government should reduce the burden of work on teachers.I find that I always have too much work to do.”5.The report is clear that the problem of teacher shortage is a very serious one.It says that the government should raise teachers' pay significantly,to catch up with workers in other professions. It also suggests that the government could launch a nationwide publicity campaign, with some advertisements on TV and in the newspapers,to show the positive sides of teaching to young people. Another solution could be set a maximum number of hours per week that teachers can work,in order to reduce stress on teachers.“Hopefully,”the report concludes,“these solutions can improve the poor image of secondary teaching, and increase the number of young people who want to become teachers in the future.” Paragraph 1A: Students' bad behavior and lack of disciplineB: Improvement of children behaviorC: Heavy workload on teachersD: The problem of low salaryE: A report on teacher shortageF: A nationwide publicity campaign

"SeasameStreet"has been called"the longest street in the world".
This is because the television program by that name can now be seen in so many parts ofthe world.
The program, which went on the air in New York in 1969,uses songs, jokes, andpictures to give children a basic understanding of numbers, letters and humanrelationships.More than 6 million children in the United States watch itregularly. The viewers(观众)include more than half the nation′s children before school age.
Manyteacher consider the program a great help, though some teachers find that problems happen when the first-year pupils who have learned from"SeasameStreet"are in the same class with those who have not watched the program.Tests have shown that children who watch it five times a week learn more than those who seldom watch it.In the United States the program is shown at differenthours during the week in order to increase the number of children who can watchit regularly.
Why has"Seasame Street"been so much more successful than other children′sshows? Many reasons have been suggested.Perhaps one reason is that motherswatch"Seasame Street"along with their children. But the best reasonfor the success of the program may be that it makes every child watching itfeel able to learn. The child finds himself learning, and he wants to learnmore.
"Seasame Street"is a TV program produced mainly forA.children

Questions 16 to 20 are based on the following passage.
In a time of low academic achievement by children in the United States, many Americans are turning to Japan, a country of high academic achievement and economic success, for possible answers. However, the answers provided by Japanese preschools are not the ones Americans expected to find. In most Japanese preschools, surprisingly little emphasis is put on academic instruction. In one investigation, 300 Japanese and 210 American preschool teachers, child development specialists, and parents were asked about various aspects of early childhood education. Only 2 percent of the Japanese respondents (答问卷者) listed “to give children a good start academically” as one of their top three reasons for a society to have preschools. In contrast, over half the American respondents chose this as one of their top three choices. To prepare children for successful careers in first grade and beyond, Japanese schools do not teach reading, writing, and mathematics, but rather skills such as persistence, concentration, and the ability to function as a member of a group. The vast majority of young Japanese children are taught to read at home by their parents.
In the recent comparison of Japanese and American preschool education, 91 percent of Japanese respondents chose providing children with a group experience as one of their top three reasons for a society to have preschools. Sixty-two percent of the more individually oriented (强调个性发展的) Americans listed group experience as one of their top three choices. An emphasis on the importance of the group seen in Japanese early childhood education continues into elementary school education.
Like in America, there is diversity in Japanese early childhood education. Some Japanese kindergartens have specific aims, such as early musical training or potential development. In large cities, some kindergartens are attached to universities that have elementary and secondary schools. Some Japanese parents believe that if their young children attend a university-based program, it will increase the children’s chances of eventually being admitted to top-rated schools and universities. Several more progressive programs have introduced free play as a way out for the heavy intellectualizing in some Japanese kindergartens.
Why do some Japanese parents send their children to university-based kindergartens?()A、They can do better in their future studies.B、They can accumulate more group experience there.C、They can be individually oriented when they grow up.D、They can have better chances of getting a first-rate education

问答题Passage 1 There was a time 1 parents who wanted an educational present for their children would buy a typewriter, a globe or an encyclopedia set. Now those 2 seem hopelessly old-fashioned: this Christmas, there were a lot of personal computers under the tree. Convinced that computers are their key 3 success, parents are also frantically insisting that children 4 taught to use them on school as early as possible. The problem for schools is that when 5 comes to computers, parents don't always know best. Many schools are yielding to parental impatience and are purchasing hardware 6 sound educational planning so they can say, "OK, we've moved into the computer age." Teachers found themselves 7 in the middle of the problem--between parent pressure and wise educational decisions. Educators do not even agree 8 how computers should be used. A lot of money is going for computerized educational materials that research has shown can be taught just as well 9 pencil and paper. Even those 10 believe that all children should have access to computers warn of potential dangers to the very young. The temptation remains strong largely because young children adapt so well 11 computers. First graders have been seen willing to work for two hours on math skills. Some have an attention span of 20 minutes. Not every school, 12 , can afford to go into computing, and that 13 yet another problem: a division between the haves and have-nots. Very few parents ask 14 computer instructions in poor school districts, in 15 there may be barely enough money to pay the teacher.

In your essay, make full use of the information provided in the text(s). If you use more than three consecutive words from the text(s), use quotation marks (“ ”). You should write 160—200 words on the ANSWER SHEET. The information and computer technologies have boosted the efficiency and convenience of people’s work and study. Their application in school education has provided teachers and students with new approaches to knowledge and information. There is a heated discussion about whether computers will replace teachers. The following are the supporters’ and opponents’ opinions. Supporters: With the advanced computer and Internet, children can get the learning material whenever they want. Online teaching is becoming more and more popular that students can get planned lessons online. After each class, there is homework for them to do. Both the learning and practice can be done on computers. From computers students can learn something that they are interested in so that they won’t be restricted to the subjects that they are taught at school. Therefore, students will have the opportunity to achieve an all-around development. Opponents: Students need to communicate with teachers and get instructions from them whenever they have troubles in their study. Computers are only cold devices that will affect children’s ability to have face-to-face communication. Education is not only about imparting the knowledge, but also being a useful person. So students need to learn some useful values to be a good person which sometimes cannot be easily learned from computers. Children who use computer will learn to communicate with machines instead of people. There is a risk that they will be a generation of social illiterates.

问答题Practice 2 Private school does not mean better. But it does mean expensive. Public schools in the US are paid for by money from everyone; private schools are not. Parents who send their children to private schools must pay to do so. Parents may have enough money to pay for private schools. But these schools do not have to accept their children. Most private schools accept only children who are already doing well in school and are able to work quietly, Some take only boys or only girls. Classes are often quieter and less crowded than classes in public schools. This gives children a chance to learn more of what their teachers are trying to teach them. Public schools do not teach religion. So some parents choose private religious schools for their children. These schools each belong to a church. 6 They give lessons about that religion. They give lessons in all the usual school subjects as well. Children at many private schools wear special school uniforms, all exactly the same. At public schools, students wear what they want. They often dress in bright colors and tennis shoes. They sometimes invent new and wonderful fashions.

问答题练习1 Parents in China are always trying to help their children, even to make the most important decision for them, regardless of what the children really want, because parents believe it’s all for the benefit of their children. This has led to the result that the children’s growth and education tend to give way to their parents’ wishes. Once the parents decide to sign up an after school class for their children in order to increase their chance of being admitted to a good school, they will stick on their decision, even their children have no interest in it at all. In America, however, parents tend to respect their children, especially when making decisions. Perhaps it is commendable that Chinese parents lay much importance on education, but Chinese parents still need to keep the balance between the parents and children in the perspective of education as the American parents do.
