As we have seen, the focus of medical care in our society has been shifting from curing disease to preventing disease一especially in terms of changing our many unhealthy behaviors, such as poor eating habits, smoking, and failure to exercise. The line of thought involved in this shift can be pursued further. Imagine a person who is about the right weight , but does not eat very nutritious(有营养的)foods , who feels OK but exercises only occasionally , who goes to work every day , but is not an outstanding worker, who drinks a few beers at home most nights but does not drive while drunk, and who has no chest pains or abnormal blood counts, but sleeps a lot and often feels tired. This person is not ill.He may not even be at risk for any particular disease. But we can imagine that this person could be a lot healthier.
The field of medicine has not traditionally distinguished between someone who is merely "not ill" and someone who is in excellent health and pays attention to the body's special needs. Both types have simply been called "well".In recent years, however, some health specialists have begun to apply the terms "well" and "weilness" only to those who are actively striving to maintain and improve their body's condition. Most importantly, perhaps, people who are well take active responsibility for all matters related to their health.Even people who have a physical disease or handicap(缺陷)may be "well" ,in this new sense,if they make an effort to maintain the best possible health they can in the face of their physical limitations."Wellness" may perhaps best be viewed not as a state that people can achieve, but as an ideal that people can strive for. People who are well are likely to be better able to resist disease and to fight disease when it strikes. And by focusing attention on healthy ways of living, the concept of weilness can have a beneficial impact on the way in which people face the challenges of daily life.

According to the second paragraph about the traditional care, which statement is true?
A:if the person does not have' any unhealthy living habits,he is considered "well".
B:If the person does not have any psychological disease,he is considererd "well".
C:If the person could be able to handle his daily routines,he is considererd "well".
D:If the nerson could be free from any kind of disease.he is considererd "well".

根据第一段第一句“…the focus of medical care in our society has been-shifting from curing disease to preventing disease一especially in terms of changing our many unhealthy behaviors...”
由第一段倒数三句“This person is not ill.He may not even be at risk for any particular disease. But we can imagine that this person could be a lot healthier.”
根据第二段第一、二句“The field of medicine has not traditionally distinguished between someone who is merely'not ill'and someone who is in excellent health and pays attention to the body's special needs. Both types have simply been called 'well'.”
根据第二段的倒数第三句“'Weilness' may perhaps best be viewed not as a state that people can achieve, but as an ideal than people can strive for.”

C“Old wives tales” are beliefs passed down from one generation to another, For Example, most of us remember our parents’ telling us to eat more of certain foods or not to do certain things. Is there any truth in these teachings? Some of them agree with present medical thinking, but others have not passed the test of time.Did your mother ever tell you to eat your carrots because they are good for your eyes? Scientists now report that eating carrots can help prevent a serious eye disease called macular degeneration. Eating just one carrot a day can reduce the possibility of getting this disease by 40%. Garlic (蒜) is good for you, too. It can kill the type of virus that causes colds.Unfortunately, not all of Mom’ s advice passed the test of medical studies, For example, generations of children have been told not to go swimming within an hour after eating. But research suggests that there is no danger in doing so. Do sweets cause tooth problems? Well, yes and no. Sticky sweets made with grains tend to cause more problems than sweets made with simple sugars.Even though science can tell us that some of our traditional beliefs don’t hold water, there is still a lot of truth in the old wives’ tales. After all, much of this knowledge has been accumulated (积累) from thousands of years of experience in family health care. We should respect this body of knowledge even as we search for clear scientific support to prove it true or false.48. Which of the following is TRUE according to the test?A. Eating garlic is good for our eyes.B. Sticky sweets are damaging to our teeth.C. Swimming after a meal is dangerous.D. Carrots prevent people from catching colds.

Plan for Disease PreventionUrging Americans to take responsibility for their health,Health and Human Services Secretary Tommy Thompson on Tuesday launched a $15 million program to try to encourage communities to do more to prevent chronic diseases like heart disease, cancer and diabetes(糖尿病).The initiative highlights the costs of chronic diseases一the leading causes of death in the United States一and outlines ways that people can prevent them, including better diet and increased exercise."In the United States today,7 of 10 deaths and the vast majority of serious illness, disability and health care costs are caused by chronic diseases,"the Health and Human Services department said in a statement. The causes are often behavioral一smoking, poor eating habits and a lack of exercise."I am convinced that preventing disease by promoting better health is a smart policy choice for our future,"Thompson told a conference held to launch the initiative."Our current health care system is not structured to deal with the rising costs of treating diseases that are largely preventable through changes in our lifestyle choices."Thompson said heart disease and strokes will cost the country more than $351 billion in 2003."These leading causes of death for men and women are largely preventable, yet we as a nation are not taking the steps necessary for us to lead healthier, longer lives,"he said. The $15 million is designed to go to communities to promote prevention, pushing for changes as simple as building sidewalks to encourage people to walk more.Daily exercise such as walking can prevent and even reverse heart disease and diabetes, and prevent cancer and strokes. The money will also go to community organizations, clinics and nutritionists who are being encouraged to work together to educate people at risk of diabetes about what they can do to prevent it and encourage more cancer screening. The American Cancer Society estimates that half of all cancers can be caught by screening, including Pap tests(巴 氏实验)for cervical(子宫颈的)cancer, mammograms(乳房X线照片)for breast cancer, colonoscopies(结肠镜检查),and prostate(前列腺的)checks. If such cancers were all caught by early screening, the group estimates that the survival rate for cancer would rise to 95 percent.Which of the following is NOT true of chronic diseases in the US?A: They account for 70% of all deaths.B: They are responsible for most of the health care costs.C:They often result in unhealthy lifestyles.D:They are largely preventable.

A Society Without a Formal AuthorityIn the seventeenth century,European soldiers who came across some Indian groups in the westem Great Lakes found that several native tribes(部落)were living in the area without a formal leadership system. They appeared to be"quite friendly with each other without a formal authority"!Not only did the Indians appear to lack a formal system of authority, but they also deeply hated any efforts to control their actions. All members of the tribes knew what was required of them by lifelong(一生的)familiarity with the tasks of the area. These tasks tended to be simple, since the Indians' rate of social change was slow. Thus, although subgroups such as soldiers had recognized leaders,no real authority was required.Rather than giving direct orders(which were considered rough),members of the tribes would arouse others to action by examples. It would be difficult,if not impossible,to carry out such a system in our own society. Most oi us have grown up under one authority or another for as long as we can remember. Our parents, our teachers, our bosses, our government all have the recognized right under certain conditions to tell u, what to do.The authority is so much a part of our culture that it is hard for us to imagine a workabl( society without it.We have been used to relying on authority to get things done and would probably be uncomfortable with the Indian methods of examples on a large scale.Of course, the major reason why the Indian system would not be suitable for us is that our society is too large. The number of tasks that various members of our society have to perform often undertight time and resource limitations could not be treated by the Indian system,in modern societies, the formal authority system is necessary to achieve any social objectives. It can be inferred from the passage that many tasks in our society have to be carried out_________.A:under severe weather conditionsB:without any effortC:without any delayD:with ease

US Blacks Hard-hit by CancerDeath rates for cancer are falling for all Americans, but black Americans are still more likely to die ofcancer than whites, the American Cancer Society said Monday. In a special report on cancer and blacks, the organization said blacks are usually diagnosed with cancerlater than whites, and they are more likely to die of the disease. This could be because of unequal access to medical care, because blacks are more likely to have otherdiseases like diabetes as well, and perhaps because of differences in the biology of the cancer itself, the report added."In general,African Americans have]ess likelihood of surviving five years after diagnosis than whites forall cancer sites and all stages of diagnosis,"the report said."In describing cancer statistics for African Americans, this report recognizes that socioeconomic dispari-ties and unequal access to medical care may underlie many of the differences associated with race."The Cancer Society said blacks should be encouraged to get check-ups earlier, when cancer is moretreatable, and it said more research was needed to see if biological differences play a role.Since 1992,cancer death rates among black Americans_______.A:have been going up and down B:have remained stableC:have increased D:have fallen

How Human's Personalities and Behaviors Are Formed1 People have wondered for a long time how their personalities and behaviors are formed. It is not easy to explain why one person is intelligent and another is not,or why one is cooperative and another is competitive.2 Social scientists are,of course, extremely interested in these types of questions. They want to explain why we possess certain characteristics and exhibit certain behaviors. There are no clear answers yet,but two distinct schools of thought on the matter have developed. As one might expect, the two approaches are very different from each other. The controversy is often conveniently referred to as "nature vs.nurture".3 Those who support the"nature"side of the conflict believe that our personalities and behavior patterns are largely determined by biological factors. That our environment has littie,if anything ,to do with our abilities, characteristics and behaviors is central to this theory.Taken to an extreme, this theory maintains that our behavior is pre-determined to such a great degree that we are almost completely governed by our instincts.4 Those who support the"nurture"theory, that is,they advocate education, are often called behaviorists. They claim that our environment is more important than our biologically based instincts in determining how we will act.A behaviorist, B.F.Skinner,sees humans as beings whose behavior is almost completely shaped by their surroundings. The behaviorists maintain that, like machines ,humans respond to environmental stimuli as the basis of their behavior.5 Let us examine the different expianations about one human chiaracteristic, intelligence ,offered by the tow theories.Supporters of the"nature"theory insist that we are born with a certain capacity for learning that is biologically determined.Needless to say ,they don’t believe that factors in the enviroment have much inluence on what is basically a predetermined characteristic. On the other hand, behaviorists argue that our inelligence levels are the product of our experiences.Behaviorists suggest that the child who is raised in an invironment where there are many stimuli which develop his or her capacity for appropriate responses will experience greater intellectual development.Paragraph 1______A:Environment is ImportantB:Two Approaches Different From Each Other Are FormedC:People Want to Know How Their Personalities and Behaviors Are FormedD:Our Personalities and Behavior Patterns Are Largely Determined by Biological FactorsE:We Want to Explain the Behaviors F:Tow Similar Approaches Are Forme

Practice 8 I stand here today humbled by the task before us, grateful for the trust you’ve bestowed, mindful of the sacrifices borne by our ancestors. I thank President Bush for his service to our nation, as well as the generosity and cooperation he has shown throughout this transition. Forty-four Americans have now taken the presidential oath. The words have been spoken during rising tides of prosperity and the still waters of peace. Yet, every so often the oath is taken amidst gathering clouds and raging storms. At these moments, America has carried on not simply because of the skill or vision of those in high office, but because We the People have remained faithful to the ideals of our forbearers, and true to our founding documents. That we are in the midst of crisis is now well understood. Our nation is at war, against a far-reaching network of violence and hatred. Our economy is badly weakened, a consequence of greed and irresponsibility on the part of some, but also our collective failure to make hard choices and prepare the nation for a new age. Homes have been lost; jobs shed; businesses shuttered. Our health care is too costly; our schools fail too many; and each day brings further evidence that the ways we use energy strengthen our adversaries and threaten our planet. These are the indicators of crisis, subject to data and statistics. Less measurable but no less profound is a sapping of confidence across our land—a nagging fear that America’s decline is inevitable, and the next generation must lower its sights. Today I say to you that the challenges we face arc real. They are serious and they are many. They will not be met easily or in a short span of time. But know this, America—they will be met.
